When Greenstone was established, the founders wanted to test how far they could push the boundaries of quality Shiraz wine making in Australia and made a concerted effort to explore the effects different Shiraz clones would have on an outstanding site. Our Heathcote vineyard, on the ancient Cambrian range, is planted facing an easterly direction. Vines are planted up and down the range in the same path of the summer sun – East to West. This orientation protects the fruit from direct sunlight exposure at any time, and ensures some shading of lower basal leaves to prolong their presence and ripening effort. The fruit ripens slowly and evenly, even in drought summers.
The 2017 Geminus Shiraz is a blend of the best clones from our outstanding & unique Heathcote Vineyard.
The 1127 clone provides a backbone of fine but firm tannin while 2626 provides pretty aromatics & finesse. 1654 gives the hallmark black fruited, warm climate Shiraz character with PT10 providing bright blue fruit juxtaposed against the violets & peppery characters of the R6 clone. It is through this painstaking blending exercise that we created the 2017 ‘Geminus’ Shiraz— a wine that is greater than the sum of its parts!
